Shareholders of Hewlett-Packard had a rough time last week. Having endured the fall of HP shares to a seven-year low last month, they have had to stand by as the numbers have gotten even worse. On Friday, HP shares set yet another ignominious milestone, hitting $18.98 a share and trading at the lowest levels seen since late 2004, falling nearly 2 percent on a day when the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by more than 1.6 percent. The fall came in partial reaction to an earnings warning from printer company Lexmark, which slashed its second-quarter sales and profit forecasts…

Buying corporate capital

Tweet By Sarah Trefethen The way money is flowing these days, corporate tenants may be asking: why rent if you can buy? With lenders less enthused by real estate investment than they are by well-heeled corporate borrowers, some experts say, the interest, taxes and maintenance fees that an owner-occupier would pay for office or retail space in Manhattan stack up favorably against commercial rents. Michael Rotchford “It’s a cyclical situation, ” said Michael Rotchford, Cushman and Wakefield’s head of corporate finance and investment banking. “In certain times in the real estate…

Acquisition of copyrighted material

I remember the very first time I used bittorrent. It was 2004 and I was at a prominent university in the USA, which I quit after a few months. It wasn’t until reflecting upon Steal This Film that I realized how much the acquisition of copyrighted material influenced my life. This is not just because PC games, films, and music brought me countless hours of entertainment. It’s because the time spent searching for ways to download these forms of media exposed me to new information and more importantly, taught me how to find the information/data I seek. Being able to distinguish…

We expect to complete the text by the end of this year. Comments are always welcome. Remember this is a textbook aimed at undergraduate students and so the writing will be different from my usual blog free-for-all. Note also that the text I post is just the work I am doing by way of the first draft so the material posted will not represent the complete text. Further it will change once the two of us have edited it. Continuing…

The StarTAC was very successful even before the original RAZR existed, and it revolutionized the clamshell design in the late 90′s. It appears that last week, on July 9th, Motorola filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office seeking a trademark for the name “Star Tac” for mobile phones, smartphones, cordless phones and accessories therefor, namely battery chargers and power adaptors. Interestingly enough…

How to sell organizational capital structure?

(James Saft is a Reuters columnist. The opinions expressed are his own) By James Saft (Reuters) – Never mind that our largest banks are too big to be allowed to fail, they show every sign of being too big for investors. By now anyone committing capital to the largest banks must do so with the understanding that they aren’t just risky and volatile, but often badly managed and highly likely to produce further scandals in which insiders gain at the expense of everyone else in the capital structure . For bondholders, the largest banks at least come with an implied backstop from…

With Paramount Pictures set to finally release its film adaptation of World War Z next year (starring the ever-dreamy Brad Pitt), it s now filing trademarks for lots of associated products. In addition to filings for various undead merchandise (Halloween costumes!), the company has also filed two trademarks relating to video games.
