What is Knowledge Management in Law Firms?
If all law firms went paperless tomorrow, sending all of their files into the cloud, am I the only one who’d miss those mad-dash all-out frantic searches for client files?
Every once in a while, the siren call goes out that a crucial file is missing and needed ASAP. A full-scale search is launched for the missing file. We round up the usual suspects, “Law & Order” style – everyone knows who the file hoarders are. Once we search the offices of the known offenders, we start ticking through all the lawyers working on that matter. Secretaries are organized into search parties, and sent into offices to ransack stacks and piles until, sooner or later, the file is found.
The future holds the promise of a day when all files are stored electronically and – wondrously – can be searched for easily. However, knowing how cautious most lawyers are, I don’t think the profession will be leading the way into totally abandoning paper files. Plus, some security issues remain unsolved. Ethical concerns have been raised about the ability to protect client security and confidentiality – a cornerstone of lawyers’ duty to their clients.
How law firms are tip-toeing into the cloud for document management
There are some ways that law firms can move slowly toward cloud document management, as they get comfortable with the security issues and work out encryption kinks.
