Definition of Patent Duration

A full panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit heard oral arguments Friday in a case to determine the patent eligibility of a computer-assisted financial transaction method. The case pits CLS Bank International, the largest multi-currency cash settlement system for the foreign exchange market, versus Alice Corp., the patent holder of a "computerized trading platform for exchange obligations." A panel of Federal Circuit judges validated the patents in a 2-1 ruling in July. In October, the Federal Circuit granted an en banc review. In arguing…

Knowledge Management Evaluation Tools

Within international development there has been an increasing interest in knowledge management and knowledge brokering and it has not always been easy to deal with terminology (the K* space holder demonstrates this nicely). However, when faced with holding a workshop bringing together both KB and KM practitioners to discuss the use of indicators to measure both activities, it was necessary to move the terminology debate from the general to the specific and agree on some sort of working definition. Thus, I am suggesting these working definitions. The KM definition is provided…

What is Human Resources Systems?

Background: Research on practical and effective governance of the health workforce is limited. This paper examines health system strengthening as it occurs in the intersection between the health workforce and governance by presenting a framework to examine health workforce issues related to eight governance principles: strategic vision, accountability, transparency, information, efficiency, equity/fairness, responsiveness and citizen voice and participation. Methods: This study builds off of a literature review that informed the development of a framework that describes linkages…

Last Saturday I noted how the On Faith feature in the February 9 Washington Post celebrated Muslim modesty while trashing American Catholic bishops as being prudish on sex and stubborn in their opposition to the ObamaCare contraception mandate. Well this weekend, the Post continued its hypocritical attack on the Church by complaining that it doesn't listen to women while, well, squelching the op-ed piece of a conservative Catholic woman. The February 16 On Faith section published two items related to Pope Benedict's announcement on Monday that he was abdicating…

What is Human Resources Management function?

What is Human Resources Management function?

My general advice to new CEOs is that their first initiative should be to abolish their company’s HR department. This will make them very popular with their staff and generally enhance their operational effectiveness. Each section manager should be capable of basic HR management and just have a lawyer or two on call for the difficult stuff. But Google may be an exception to my rule. Stuff reported: A few years ago, Google’s human resources department noticed a problem: A lot of women were leaving the company. Like the majority of Silicon Valley software firms, Google is staffed…

Explain Knowledge Management Process

Explain Knowledge Management Process

Large parts of my PhD thesis are based on a theory by Morten T. Hansen, Nitin Nohria, and Thomas Tierney [1]. In their article the authors analyze different consulting companies and define two basic strategies for knowledge management: The codification and the personalization. An organization has to follow one of those, the one that fits to the competitive strategy best. Note: Most of the text from this post is directly taken from my PhD thesis. That is also the reason why this text is so long and detailed… Sorry for that. Codification The goal of codification is the re-use…

What is Intangibles of Teaching?

What is Intangibles of Teaching?

As most of you probably realize teaching is unlike any other profession. Most of you have probably also realized that no one outside of teaching realizes this. Justified by the response, when asked at a party what do you do, you say I’m a teacher, only to get the reply, “oh isn’t that nice.” (like it is a charity we do for free and not a “real” job). So we would like to hear from you, what are some things about teaching that are not like other jobs. Leave a comment below with your ideas!

Explain goodwill accounting

Explain goodwill accounting

Impairment testing was introduced to ensure that the carrying amount of an asset recognized on the balance sheets does not exceed its recoverable amount. Therefore, basically all assets are subject to a test for impairment, under either IAS 36 (Impairment of Assets), or another standard. An academically sound standard, IAS 36 sets out sets of rules covering how tangible and intangible assets, including goodwill, have to be tested for impairments. However, in applying it, due to two different value concepts, several issues lead to difficulties and ambiguity, especially with goodwill…
