Notes on the Copyright, designs and patents act 1988:

  • Intellectual property means you own what you create.
  • The copyright, designs and patents act 1988 was made to protect intellectual property.
  • Copyright means that you should only copy or use copyrighted work if you have the owners permission.
  • There is an exception if you are using it for educational purposes, such as research or private study – but you must always acknowledge your sources.
  • Design right gives you protection from copying of your original design – you can register your design to protect it from being copied for up to 25 years.
  • If you invent something new that can be made or used, you can patent it – this will protect your idea for up to 20 years.
  • An organisation can register a trademark so customers can tell it apart from other organisations.
  • A trademark can be a name, logo, domain name, slogan, shape or sound.
