Do you know how to network?  July 4, 2011 – 01:21 pm
Learn More; We Know Talent

We found this article from CBS about networking with purpose. The article focuses on the importance of knowing where your target audience is. Maybe there’s a place they gather regularly (Hmmm… Homeowners meeting, anyone? ) where you can go connect with them. If the meeting of your target audience has a social hour, then it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start attending. As the author of the article says, the meeting portion is going to limit who you can connect with, and cost a hefty chunk of time, whereas the social hour nets more connections with a smaller time investment.

Here are some tips from Tom Searcy, the author of the article:

  • Try to see how many potential prospects you can meet.
  • Don’t just hang around people you already know or work with. If you want to talk to potential prospects with someone else, try doing so with an ally from another company.
  • If several of your coworkers are in attendance - split up and cover different territory!
  • If you can chose where to sit, wait to sit until you know where people are sitting – then decide which table will be the most fruitful for you.
  • Try to make more potential prospects each time you do this – There’s always room for improvement, after all!
  • Make the newbies feel welcome!

I know that there are anomalies, and I know that not every star system is necessarily like ours, but what I am hoping to find out here is why, specifically, we don’t believe that most stars have a distinct probability of having orbiting planetary bodies.
