Periodically, we like to share the success stories of companies dealing with HR issues. This case study comes courtesy of Joy Meserve, VP of camp operations for iD Tech Camps in Campbell, CA.


It was time for us to reconsider how we trained our managers on hiring new employees.

Our managers handle so many important aspects of our business, but the most crucial, in our opinion, is hiring.

We know what a costly mistake it can be for the company, our staff members and our customers if we don’t hire well.

That’s not to say that we didn’t conduct training ourselves – once a year, we trained managers on how to look through applications, spot red flags and more.

But we were looking for our managers to develop their interviewing techniques a little more professionally.

5 goals

So we helped put together a daylong interviewing workshop for managers.

Along with the help of an outside vendor, we came up with a handful of things we wanted managers to learn in the training, including:

  • effective interview preparation techniques
  • the art of questioning and probing
  • the legal factors involved with interviewing (what to ask and what not to ask)

Folks, here is how i'm voting
1. end the state income tax. i'll vote to end it. i'm afraid the town is going to raise taxes to make up for the deficit and there's less resources to fight local towns than on state level.
2. decriminalization of pot. there's a lot of scare tactics on how pots is dangerous and such. while not a user myself, i have to try hard and be fair. i'll vote to ... whom he has nothing in common.
One of the crowd is so moved by this testimony as to yell: "I love you, Tucker!" "I love you too," he shoots back, "And I mean that in a nonerotic, but powerful way." I can't help but think that this sort of interaction is good for the personal growth of the Paultards, as Tucker will introduce them to something they've likely never experienced before: irony.


Your post about your observations of the filene's store manager in nashua, new hampshire concerned me enough to write their human resources department. not because it seemed to be an unusual circumstance, but because it happens far too often.
i spoke with the director of human resources this morning who apologized and heartily agreed that the interaction you witnessed was highly inappropri.... and the director assured me that she did not consider it an excuse.
all managers are going to be informed that this incident took place and the concern that it has caused. this is not an incident that they want repeated for any of their customers regardless of age, race or the emotional state of their employees.
i know it doesn't change what happened, but i just wanted you to know.

Short answer

An article in Rolling Stone (October 20, 1994) by Adam Miller called J. Philippe Rushton a 'professor of hate,' someone who 'takes money from an organization with a terrible past' (the Pioneer Fund, a foundation said to have an orientation toward eugenics). He is accused of being 'obsessed with intelligence and genetics' to the point of having 'racist' attitudes by Jeffrey Rosen and Charles Lane...t is precisely this set of relationships that elevates social science above and beyond empiricism in theory or racism in practice. For these reasons, Professor Rushton is and must be considered a valued member of both the academic and scientific communities to which he contributes. We need to be reminded that those truths held to be self-evident are those which are most in need of reexamination.
