Akshoomoff, N., (2012).  Diagnosis and assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Audio-Digest Psychology, 1(15), August 7, 2012.

Audio-Digest Psychology is a continuing education service of the Audio-Digest Foundation.  The Foundation has recently added to its services Audio-Digest Psychology, providing two lectures per month on several audio formats (i.e., CD, mobile devices, computer) with associated post-tests allowing the user to earn C.E. credits easily.  Subscriptions are available for purchase and the user can obtain 24 hours of quality C.E. credit per year, approved for most professional groups, relatively easily.

In this issue, Natacha Akshoomoff, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Center for Human Development at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine outlines the current trends and accepted practices for diagnosing and assessing autism spectrum disorders.  This is particularly timely since profound changes are being proposed in this area with the impending publication of DSM-5.

The discussion begins with reviews of several major studies completed at the CDC, the Fordham Institute, and the California Department of Developmental Services.  The National Survey of Children’s Health found a high prevalence of parents reporting children with ASD, estimating 1 in 91 children ages 3 to 17, according to parental reports.  The Fordham Institute study demonstrated a steady increase in children with ASD between 2000 and 2010 – saying that the numbers quadruped.  Fordham estimated that the percentage of children with ASD among all disabilities rose from 1.5% to 5.8% in that period.  As this occurred, children identified with specific learning disabilities decreased.   The CDC analyzed thousands of records from 2002 to 2006 and found a significant increase in prevalence between the two time points.

Short answer

An article in Rolling Stone (October 20, 1994) by Adam Miller called J. Philippe Rushton a 'professor of hate,' someone who 'takes money from an organization with a terrible past' (the Pioneer Fund, a foundation said to have an orientation toward eugenics). He is accused of being 'obsessed with intelligence and genetics' to the point of having 'racist' attitudes by Jeffrey Rosen and Charles Lane...t is precisely this set of relationships that elevates social science above and beyond empiricism in theory or racism in practice. For these reasons, Professor Rushton is and must be considered a valued member of both the academic and scientific communities to which he contributes. We need to be reminded that those truths held to be self-evident are those which are most in need of reexamination.
