OTTAWA — Fresh concerns have been raised about the government’s refusal to identify bureaucrats who abuse their positions after International Development Minister Julian Fantino referred another potential conflict-of-interest case to the public sector integrity commissioner on Thursday. That’s because the new case allegedly involves a former Canadian International Development Agency executive who was at the centre of an integrity commissioner report last week that found “gross mismanagement” and abuse of government resources. How to explain copyright laws?

In Classifying Patent and Copyright Law as ‘Property’: So What? , I noted that some libertarian proponents of IP, like Richard Epstein and Adam Mossoff,  try to defend IP by arguing that it “can” be treated like property by a legal system. As I explain there, it is not really relevant whether it “can” or not. Libertarians should not be legal positivists: the fact that a given thing is or can be law is not an argument that it is justified. And in fact, IP is not similar to property rights in scarce resources, as noted by legal scholars such as Tom Bell, Peter Menell, and Wendy…

Explain Patent leather Shoes

The sandal is the oldest standard shoe form. The Greek work for sandal means ‘strap shoe’ and is a generic term for open shoes in which a sole is held to the wearer’s foot by straps. The simplest form of sandal is the toe-separator sandal. It is a unisex model, thanks to its simplicity and lack of heel. A feminine version of the sandal is available with heels. Although, in Late Antiquity, etiquette required the wearing of socks or stockings with sandals so as not to reveal bare feet, today, we would very much dissuade against this: wearing socks with sandals is a definite no-no!…

Launching the thing, though, proved more difficult than anticipated, and no-one suitable could be found to head this vital new body. The initiative got off to a wobbly start at the outset. In 2011, a closed-door meeting about the office, organised by the government, was criticised by some scholars…

As I was looking for more research for my final paper on licensing, I stumbled upon this video. It’s basically an accumulation of a lot of Disney films with portions of sentences and words to explain copyright laws. The irony of the video is that it’s a mash-up of different films with the use of the sentences. Prof. Eric Faden of Bucknell created this video in hopes of explaining  the laws of copyright and how, if he actually made this video on the market, what would the case present itself as. The fake case argues on whether or not it infringes Disney’s copyright. One website…

By Bill Hangley Jr. Students, community advocates, and Philadelphia School District officials agree: Closing high schools this year will make getting into college even tougher than usual for next year’s seniors. “I want to go to college, and I’d have to meet all new counselors, all new teachers, ” said Keith Harmon, a junior at Germantown High. “I have to get my letters of recommendation, [and] I wouldn’t really know nobody. I wouldn’t know who to go to.” Harmon’s classmate, Quinisa Powell, put it more simply. “It will be hard to start all over, ” she said. Featured Title: …

Evaluation of patent rights

Evaluation of patent rights

Once an extension of term has been granted, should a pharmaceutical patent owner’s exclusive rights extend to manufacture for export and sale in other countries? The owner of a patent has the exclusive right of exploitation. As might be expected, sale of patented products and products made using patented processes is included in the definition of ‘exploit’ in Schedule 1 of the Patents Act 1990 (Cth), but it extends to manufacture, use and other activities. Thus, anyone making a patented product or using a patented process in Australia without the patent owner’s permission risks…
