Florida divorce without legal strategy is unwise  November 25, 2012 – 01:54 pm

Celebrity break-ups often lead to high-asset divorces. Rarely does a person with wealth and fame work through a divorce without legal representation. Long-time "Friends" star Courteney Cox, however, is apparently one of them.

Florida legal analysts are shaking their heads about the Courteney Cox and David Arquette divorce. Arquette, also a famous actor, recently filed a petition without an attorney. Cox's response to the filing was also made without a lawyer. Neither filing makes mention of a prenuptial agreement.

The couple's divorce does not appear to be contentious. As most divorce attorneys know, the division of considerable assets can upset any former spousal harmony.

The net worth of the stars is immense. Cox's financial status is valued at around $75 million. Arquette is said to be worth about $18 million. With no prenup, under the laws of a community property state, Cox may be forced into a 50-50 share of her fortune.

It may seem self-serving for legal advisers to encourage the hiring of divorce attorneys, but clients benefit immensely.

Attempting to stay amicable through divorce is admirable. The reality is that most couples are bargaining for their future during divorce. That can bring out emotions neither spouse expected to experience.

It is not likely that I shall say anything new here today. If I do, it will be of only minor significance. In all of my remarks, to paraphrase an old quip, the important will not be new, and the new will not be important. For statesmen, historians, and philosophers have been thinking, speaking, and writing on the general subject, of which my topic is a part, for nearly...rms of government man has yet devised. Our Founding Fathers thought so too, and the wisest Romans had already come to that same conclusion. So I am in excellent company. It is company which we hope more and more Americans will join. To that end we are saying everywhere we can, and asking all of you and tens of thousands to say with us: This is a Republic, not a Democracy. Let's keep it that way!
