Designed to protect intellectual property such as: Computer programs, manuals, and manuscripts.

Most intellectual property can be easily duplicated using computer technology

The law gives the creator of the material the rights to control the ways in which their material is used.

Once intellectual property is created, it is automatically covered under the act.

Modern software leaves a digital footprint in that the date, time and author are recorded at the time of creation.

For the law to take full effect, the work must be deemed original and exhibit a degree of labour, skill or judgement.

The expression of an idea is covered, although the actual idea is not.

The law aims to stop people taking other’s work.

This is because the development of an idea often costs a lot of money.

The law restricts copying, renting, lending, performing, broadcasting or showing work in public without consent.

Examples

Apple Inc. failed to persuade a U.S. appeals court to review its decision that lets Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) continue selling the Galaxy Nexus smartphone while a patent-infringement case is pending.

A court in China has ordered Apple to pay compensation to eight Chinese writers and two companies for violating their copyrights.
